Improvements in Tyre Casing Assessment and Consequent Retreadability

Objective

The aim of the proposed research is better assessment of new tyre casing integrity in order to increase the number of tyres in Europe that are recycled by retreading. At present, it is difficult to determine the quality of a casing for retreading. A number of non-destructive test procedures are employed which detect casing faults such as ply separations and broken cords, but they do not yield information on the overall state of the casing. There is an urgent need by SME Retreaders for improved assessment methods for used tyres and also a better understanding of the "quality" of new tyres as they become the basic 'raw material' of the retread industry. The main research tasks are: (i) casing evaluation studies to establish a best practice laboratory test methodology. (ii) development of a prototype novel retreadability test machine. (iii) establish and maintain a database on the retreadability of different tyre makes. A successful outcome will benefit manufacturers of retreaded tyres and other sectors concerned with transport, safety, recycling and the environment. It will help the EU objective of retreading more vehicle tyres. It will supply substantive information on the retreadability of new tyres which will allow retreaders to more readily foresee casing faults, save costs and improve safety. The estimated European market for retreaded tyres approaches 2BECU and involves retreading some 20% of all tyres. The EU goal is to increase retreading towards 30 % by the year 2000. This project will contribute towards achieving that goal.
