Development of integral linked rollformed sandwich panels for use in overhead doors

Objective

The market for overhead doors for industrial and residential applications (doors for warehouses and factories, garage doors, etc.) can be characterized as conservative regarding product development and technological innovations. Incremental improvements of the doors is not leading to structural better products. The old fashion construction methods are costly, time consuming and lead to problems in usage and maintenance. Corrosion and failure of individual components are major causes for relatively short lifetimes. A group of European SME's, active in the field of production of parts for and assembly of overhead doors, has joined forces to develop a new generation of doors, based on several innovative concepts. Main goal of the project is the development of a sandwich panel with an integrated hinges construction and its production process. The panels will have an excellent constructional linkage, reduced friction, improved stiffness and isolation properties. Other results are an easier and cost effective production method, concepts for a safe and reliable lifting system, improved quality due to the simple construction, over all reduced costs, durability, less maintenance needed, energy savings. Objectives: - development and testing of sandwich panels with integrated hinge from metal plate; - design and testing of a production process based on a new rollform technique and in line foaming, and assessment and calculation of the optimal settings of prototype equipment; - investigation and development of application areas; - development of a demonstration application: prototype of an integral improved industrial overhead door. The project consists of 7 workpackages, divided into two major phases. Duration of the project is 24 months, with an MTA at 12 months. Total costs are 996 kECU. Requested support of the CRAFT programme is 498 kECU. The project contributes to priority research tasks of the IMT working programme 1994 1998: 1.2.2M and on a shorter time frame also 1.1.1S and 2.2.2S. The projected time to market after finishing this project is one to two years. Based on prototype equipment the production has to be set up, full scale testing has to be performed and approval of the new panel and door system must be applied for. Furthermore marketing and distribution channels have to be set up as well. At first production is foreseen at one site, afterwards to be disseminated over several (licensed) production sites throughout Europe.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
