An innovative platform for tomorrow's cars

Objective

The objectives of this research are to use the advantages of aluminium honeycomb panels developed in the aeronautic sector in the automotive sector, for the development of a platform (the structural part supporting the engine and body of the vehicle) using welding techniques to meet a three-points challenge: A. a 15% gain in weight compared to other panels B. to pass European Safety Norms EUR03-93 C. low costs of production for SMI's To achieve these objectives, the R&D programme will: 1. work on the optimisation of the processing of welded aluminium based honeycomb for increased mechanical strength and durability. 2. work on the optimisation of platform design for crash resistance 3. use numerical simulation of crash and crash tests for validation of platform prototypes In accordance to the CRAFT programme, the goal of the companies involved in this cooperative research is, through the development of this platform, to make possible the arrival of a new generation of economic, flexible, safe, environmental friendly vehicles for low volume production. to respond to growing demand for tomorrow's transportation means (e.g. urban automated people movers, electrical cars ) . The main expected impacts of such a technical innovation are: - environmental friendly vehicles with lower pollution levels - more affordable flexible, urban and leisure vehicles in accordance to the new European life style - the creation of direct and indirect employment in the composites, parts and automobile industries

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
