New qualitative sorting process for fresh fruits and vegetables based on spectral analysis with the new 'Smart Camera' system

Objective

The aim of the "Smart Camera" project is to design, to develop, to test and to implement an automated machine-vision system able to perform visual inspection and qualitative sorting of fresh fruits and vegetables during operations involving these products at the Packing House. This cooperative research project is grouping 9 companies of four Member States: 4 Industrial SMEs and 2 "other proposers" specialised in electronics, in manufacturing of high precision machines, in instrumentation and calibration devices and in the production and packing of fruits and vegetables and 3 RTDs specialised in computer software and electronics, in vision and optics and in agro industrial mechanisation. The objective of this research is to develop a new methodology for the sorting of fruits and vegetables. The technical solution to permit the selection of narrow wavelength ranges, necessary to improve the effectiveness of the sorting process, should be offered by the new "Smart Camera" video Colour device. The solution will be provided by a simultaneous use of two CCDis, coupled charged devices, with a special diachronic-mirror, and a set of multiple (narrow) band pass filters, allowsing the selection of five narrow bandwidths of light. The "smart camera" project will be based on: . a patent developed by the Prime RTD, for the design of an innovative new Multispectral Camera Device, able to capture images based upon the choice of pre-selected bandwidths of light, . a "tailor-made" software, especially designed to process Multispectral data on 3D basis, to search mathematical contours and morphologies of defects, to permit a real time data processing . a high precision machine able to guide the product during its visual inspection, moving it by translation, and small rotations to permit global control of its surface state, and finally making possible the separation of acceptable and rejected products. The combined efforts of all SMEs participating to the "Smart Camera Project" will promote a real progress on the state-of-the-art in the field of sorting process of fruits and vegetables, representing a definitive improvement of its reliability, and its effectiveness, and leading to better performance of visual inspection, higher quality levels, and, consequently reduced costs of product non-conformities in the market place and reduce of social hard-working in the sector.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
