Objective
PROJEC T INFORMATION The SWCON project developes an innovative rotary printing press with an unique variable size folding possibility for A4 and A5 books. The design of the folder is unique because it is a variable size and designed in such a way that light weight and recycled papers can be produced without the necessity of a drying unit. The SWCON project is aimed at Low and Mid Range production and as such very suited for the small and medium sized companies specialised in the production of books, magazines and manuals. All in all savings can be achieved of 161.250 ECU per machine per year on operational costs and 1.100. 000 ECU on investment per machine. The project should reach a volume of 200 units within the EU and 200 outside the EU, representing and exportvolume of 120. 000 kECU. MARKET INFORMATION Todays SME printers (approx. 10. 000 in the EU) using traditional sheet fed presses find themselves in a very critical position if they do not soon specialize into niche marketing and introduce innovative production systems they will have to face bankrupcy because of the overwhelming competition of a large printing companies who can afford (by using big rotary presses) to dump prices for a period of time in order to force SME's out of business by electronic printing systems aggressively marketed and installed by mainly US and Japanese suppliers at the customer of the SME printer. The few big machine manufacturers (7 worldwide) dominate the market with big rotary presses suited for the large companies mentioned above. Because of their corporate size they are not really in the position to come up with SME type of rotary presses. The typical SME machine manufacturers however lack the capabilities to provide the SME printer with the required innovative equipment because it demands enormous recourses for RTD, prototyping and marketing.
INNOVATIVE PRODUCT FOR NICHE MARKETING For the first time ever a press will be designed to handle specifically recycled paper. The use of recycled paper is essential for the future of the printing industry and as such stimulated by the European Commission. The press and folder will be designed to produce without a drying system as normally installed on the traditional big rotary presses. This requires very delicate handling of these already instable (recycled and light) weight papers in the signature folder. This involves high technical risks. The Brite Euram Ill program would allow this partnership of SME manufacturers to realise a full scale RTD program in order to provide the SME printer with SME type of innovative production equipment so that they can succesfully specialize in this niche market because they will be. - as cost effective as the large companies but much more flexible in their organization - in the position to handle recycled and light weight paper qualities ( These paper qualities cannot be handled by the electronic printing systems because they generate too much of heat).
