A new, environmentally friendly, efficient technology for the lubrication, cleaning and disinfection of bottle conveyor belts in the beverage industry

Objective

This proposal (including its Research Feasibility Study) was elaborated with the support of the European Commission (Exploratory Award Contract N° BRST-CT97-0555). The project adresses a totally new concept in chain lubrication of bottle filling operations in the brewing and beverage industries. Based on the results obtained in the Research Feasibility Study the technical risks appear to be manageable. Potential benefits for beverage filling plants are predominantly in the area of reducing toxic and hardly biodegradable compounds, which have created significant operational and ecological problems in the past. Indirect benefits are seen in less occupational hazard produced by the aerosols of less toxic products and better control over quantities used due to implementation of new automated dosing concepts. The project requires physiko chemical research into lubrication properties of substitute materials for fatty amines, which represent state of the art today. Selection for potentially usefull candidates will be done forgood biodegradability as well as for compatibility with none chlorinating oxidative disinfectants. Parallel to this, new dosing systems have to be developed which will enable seperate dilution of disinfectant and lubricant components, and finally, involvement of at least two breweries the new sytem will be field trialled for its effectiveness. Detailed marketing surveys during the laboratory development phase will make sure that the differing customer needs throughout the European Union will be addressed and that the project results will be marketed after completition in due course. The participating SMEs will start to market the results with their own resources, but if marketing cost will turn out to be too high for a speedy penetration of available market, licensing or co producer arrangements will be sought.
