Research & study of a new type of integrated check-out for personal shopping in superstores, adapted to new technology of container systems called smart-box

Objective

This proposal is prepared with the help of an Exploratory Award obtained on January 1997 which included a Research Feasibility Study. Today, the first distribution channel for basic products is the supermarket channel. More than 100 000 000 consumers in Europe use this form of distribution and this number is constantly increasing. But the consumers complain frequently against the bad conditions of shopping in supermarket. To answer to this demand, we are proposing a totally new distribution process of goods and articles from the supermarket to the consumers' house: the SMARTBOX system. The SMARTBOX system is the combination of the SME Proposer A2 SMARTBOX and trolleys products with a new check out to be created. The SMARTBOX is a great environmentally friendly shopping concept already in use in England. By encouraging customers to use the returnable and reusable grocery boxes in conjunction with a revolutionary new trolley, SMARTBOX enables retailers to improve their customer service offer with a smarter way to shop. But this system does not use an adapted check out and is not totally efficient. The purpose of our project is to create a new type of check out to be adapted to the SMARTBOX products which would allow the customers to have better shopping conditions and the retailers to improve their service offer. This new check out should be compatible with both the SMARTBOX and the present plastic bags processes. Each of the partners attached to this project has the sufficient know how to create and realise the new components adapted to the SMARTBOX check out prototype and an other proposer (supermarket called Intermarché) has joined the partnership for a better definition and then a better exploitation of this new check out process. We use several times in this report the term smartbox : when we use the term SMARTBOX system , we mean the association of the SMARTBOX with the new check out in project; when we use the term SMARTBOX it means the recyclable plastic box patented by Buko, SME proposer A2.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
