Development of Economic One-Step Flue -Gas Cleaning Technology for Small Combustion Units

Objective

There are a lot of small and middle sized combustion units covering a broad spectrum of firing systems and input materials in Europe. All these firing systems cause emissions, such as dust, organic and inorganic substances as well as odorous gases. However, most of them do not have any off gas treatment or just have a device to remove coarse dust particles, such as an electrostatic precipitator (ESP) or a cyclone. The major disadvantage of these
offgases but do not affect the gaseous portion of the emissions. On the other hand, highly sophisticated systems with multistage scrubbers, active carbon injection/coke beds, fabric filters and catalysts as applied in municipal solid waste incineration in countries with strict limit values such as Germany (17th BlmSchV, TA Luft ), the Netherlands, Austria or Sweden, and as being asked in the EU draft to limit dioxin emissions from waste incinerators (EU 1994) are too cost intensive for smaller installations. The project proposal Development of Economic One Step Flue Gas Cleaning Technology for Small Combustion Unit (EOS Gas Cleaning) is a joint effort by various industries and a research organisation to develop a new reactor which can be used to remove dust, inorganic (except NOx), organic and odorous substances from combustion gases in one step. The reactor consists of an optimised moving bed filter technology combined with a granulated sorption material. The sorption material is a further development (modification) of Sorbalit(c) (lime based mixture with additives). In future, a compact one step flue gas cleaning system will be available to operate a variety of small and middle sized combustion units in compliance with legal requirements. As a robust system, such technology will allow for easy handling and guarantee safe operation, thus lowering costs for investment and maintenance. The availability of an economic flue gas cleaning technology will help to harmonize emissions standards in the European Union and to improve air quality, since even smaller companies can afford such technology. The project partners see a growing market and an improvement of their position in the market by developing such technology. This will help to create new qualified jobs.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
