Objective
The footwear technology of plastic boots consists in the upper over a sock lining and then the moulding of the sole onto the upper by an injection machine, usually a rotary machine equipped with up to fourteen mould carriers. a workman provide to last by hand a pre-stitched sock lining on the aluminium last; the mould closes and the sole are directly injected. after a few minutes, the mould opens and the boot is delasted by the workman or by a manipulator. This job is very repetitive and tiring : a common problem of the boot makers is the continous potential danger of serious accidents that can occour to the workman that operates near the injection machine. This project is aimed to develop a pneumatic manipulator to be enslaved to the injection rotary machines for plastic boors which is able to last, stitch and cut a sock lining on a last simulting the human hands movements jumping the pre- stitching and cutting operation. The actual availability of the fuzzy logic and neural network make it possible to conceive a device able to last a sock lining without the human intervention. This project is aimed to develop a pneumatic manipulator to be enslaved to the rotary machine for plastic boots which is able to last, stitch and cut a sock lining directly on the last simulating the hands movements jumping the pre- stitching and cutting operation. The manipulator must be able to last different sizes and model of sock lining according to the daily program of production of the injection machine and to the moulds placed on the mould carriers. Furthermore, the manipulator must pay attention to the correct positioning and orientation of the sock lining on the last avoiding to leave creases that could be cause of reject boots. An adaptive control system appears to be ideal instrument for a correct approach to the manipulation of a soft material, as a textile sock lining, to be applied on a not simmetric work piece as it is a last. The realization of this project represent a significant technological advancing step for all the SME's participating to this project : infact the manipulator represent a new product of automation for the technology supplier of boot industry; the fitting of thermoweldable sock lining open new market opportunities for sock lining suppliers and their textile fibers suppliers; the manipulator offer the opportunity to the boot makers to reduce labor costs, factory areas required, increase production, reduce rejects. The research fits areas 1. 1. 1. S. , 1. 1. 1. S. , 1. 1. 3. S. of the BRITE- EURAM III Program.
