R & D for the creation of a new machine equipment integrating blowing and filling processes to manufacture PET bottles for carbonated soft drinks

Objective

Nowadays, the bottles in polyethylene terephtalate (PET) bi-oriented have conquered a great part of a market which is in full expansion on the world level, specifically due to the alimentary sector. Manufacturing these bottles needs a very complex production line - a conditioning line -, consisting of a preform manufacturing, bottles manufacturing thanks to a blowing machine, a conveying and a filling manufacturing thanks to rinsing and filling machine. This process, and specifically the blowing/filling system, has some drawbacks : - great overall dimensions and high cost of investment due to the presence of a large length conveyor ; - high risk of pollution by external agent of the empty bottle : the existence of the conveyor imposes to take some subsidiary appliances beforehand like air filters, bottle rinsing before the filling. These appliances will not longer exist with the future new system ; - malfunctioning risks due to the conveyors length and to the necessity of taking in the filling machine botles in accumulation of the conveyor. The objective of the Craft project is to realise an integrated machine which combines both functions of filling and blowing for the carbonated soft drinks conditioning in PET. This new machine will be designed on the previous concept of monobloc filling/blowing machine specifically adapted to flat liquids. This main innovation will allow to offer a new product more economic, more compact and more reliable, considering its feasibility possible after studies already done on flat liquid drinks process. The project is relevant for the whole partners from 3 European countries, which are complementary SMEs (respectively specialised in filling machines, capping machines, in calculating laminar air flow and in view control) and adequate RTD performers (specialist in blowing machines and in mechanical characterisation of PET). The research project is integrated in the Industrial and Material Technologies (IMT) workprogramme fo'r : 1.1.1 S of the work programme on the adaptation and application of new technologies, including modeling and simulation for rationalization, integration and optimization of production systems and processes to reduce costs, throughput time and energy consumption, while increasing safety and productivity - 1.15.M of the programme on the development of multi-functional, modularly constructed and reconfigurable machines and production systems, able to provide increased flexibility and efficiency by reducing the number of stages in the production cycle - 1.1.3.S of the programme of the Improvement of traditional processes and development of new ones integrating improved CIME solutions, including CAD, in order to decrease throughput time, reduce waste and costs and improve efficiency and quality - 1.2.3.S of the programme on the
equipment for significant limitations and abatement of noise, dust, vibrations emissions, overall pollution and waste at production sits.
