A novel strength and waterproofing dual reinstatement technology for old brickwork and natural stone masonry

Objective

The reinstatement tasks to be carried out to preserve old brickwork and natural stone masonry mainly have to meet two criteria: The strengthening of the masonry in order to obtain sufficient stability for a different or further use and the horizontal waterproofing of the masonry in order to counteract the rising moisture and the destructive enrichment with salt Nowadays, for both tasks of reinstatement the injection technology is used which, by placing new, reacting materials in the masonry, has a strengthening effect on the one hand, and a waterproofing effect on the other hand. The basic problem encountered thereby from the point of view of monument and environmental protection is the use of mainly organic substances. This research project is aimed at developing a reinstatement concept for the strengthening and horizontal waterproofing of old brickwork and natural stone masonry that is: cost effective, appropriate for the type of masonry and monument concerned and quality assured and based on : purely mineral, inorganic injection materials and a further or, in partial sectors, new development of the injection technology. The development of the injection materials will start from the ultra fine cement systems used in concrete reinstatement which will be further developed; afterwards great emphasis will be put on the new development of injection materials based on the dual effect of fine and coarse components. A group of SMEs, consisting of construction firms active in the field of building reinstatement and a manufacturer of technical equipment for the reinstatement of buildings, will be supported by a university institute (research) and a manufacturer of construction materials and additives (finance, know how) in order to develop a comprehensive reinstatement concept (material and technical equipment) which will lead to an increase of their market share and to a cost efficient preservation of historical masonry which is appropriate for the type of masonry concerned. This reinstatement concept is to be sold and used on a world wide basis.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
