Objective
The primary objective of the proposed research project is to provide European SMEs with know how to enable safe and economically productive contour milling and thermal laser cutting processes on lighthweight materials in aircraft and shipbuilding industry. The range of the envisaged materials contains difficult to cut multi layer light metal structures like Alhoneycomb sheets, coated Al sheets and Al sandwich structures as well as reinforced plastics like glass reinforced plastics (GRP), carbon reinforced plastics (CRP) sheets and Aramid reinforced plastics. To increase the quality and performance of the cutting process extensive investigations concerning adapted process parameters and specially adapted milling tools with special wear resistant coatings and geometries will be carried out. The milling tools will be developed and designed according to the milling process requirements. Additionally, workpiece clamping devices, suitable for clamping multi layer structures within the cutting processes will be investigated and optimised for industrial application. The secondary objective is to develop strategies for the ecologically beneficial layout of the relevant cutting processes by use of environmental friendly ester based coolants, the reduction or avoidance of coolant and cleaning media by minimum quantity lubrication and dry machining. The reduction of aerosol, dust and toxic fume emission by careful selection of process parameters and special exhaust systems are additional keys for solutions to improve working conditions. The third objective of the project is to optimise the production and system performance via co operative partnership between companies and research technologies institutions by set up of a cutting parameter data base for the selected materials to support machine operators in selection of parameters, tools and auxiliary materials.
