Method and database to adapt metal finishing to the environment

Objective

Metal finishing is an essential process in all manufacturing, offering corrosion and wear protection and performance related to surface characteristics. For corrosion only, there are losses estimated to 4 % of GDP or about 300 billion ECU annually within the EU, of which 15 % or around 50 billion ECU could be saved with better use of existing technology. Environmental effects from the processes have gained extensive attention and implied large changes in the industry. So far, the changes have mainly been focused around waste water treatment, waste handling and closed loop technology, close to the plants. However, metal finishing has a most significant impact on the environmental effects caused backwards and forward in the production chain of a product, the use of the product and the disposal or recycling of the product. There are huge environmental benefits throughout the life cycle of a product that could be gained with wiser metal finishing. These include energy and material savings at production, reduced emissions and waste volumes, more efficient and prolonged service lives and increased recycling of scrapped products. MADAME will develop a method and a database for evaluation of the total environmental effects of a metal finishing process. The tool shall give a reasonable correct picture, but yet be simple to use for SME suppliers of metal finishing. Thus, they may profile themselves by adaptation to the main issue of today and gain market among the growing part of the 380 000 metal manufacturing companies in the EU, and many more in other countries, with increasing environmental requirements. MADAME has an agreed research methodology, a strong consortium, comprising process suppliers, metal finishers and end users, and an exploitation plan, utilising trade organisations of the sector.
