Objective
Development of advanced materials requires advanced materials testing techniques in terms of increased resolution, accuracy, measuring range, stability and speed In addition, customers want easier, faster, automated and ergonomic handling, because new materials need to pass more and more sophisticated test series in less time. These will be no more feasible with contacting sensors. The objective of this project is to develop a high definition video extensometer for non contact stress / strain / compression measurement, with technical and cost specifications which meet the high requirements.
Corresponding specifications for the sensor system are: -Measurement range: 1cm to 100 cm (i. e. camera view field), - Measuring frequency: > 0,5 kHz, - Optical resolution: > 1/40.000 of measuring range; -Accuracy: Specification according to EU standard EN10002 4 / - Resolution of indication 0,5 micron for class 0,5 extensometer / - Error of indication +/1.5 micron for class 0,5. Optimised optical recognition with regard to structure, colour and material of specimen; Full automation and real time image processing; Additional sensor system for ease of handling, allowing test bench imaging, parallel strain measurement and automated documentation of tests; Realistic sales price A non contact materials testing system combining these features will be a unique product unchallenged by any of the presently available techniques. The technical concept identified to realise this system is to combining both CCD line scanners and CCD matrix scanners in one system.
The advantage is that line scanners allow for the high resolution necessary to achieve accuracy of +/ 1.5 micron, while matrix scanners allow normal imagine the test section. High technical risk is in the optical integration of both types of scanners because of a size difference of 5mm to60mm, as well as in the safe recognition of test marks for varying materials and illumination etc. Research tasks are development of the optical system, real time image processing, a marking device, which supports good recognition, and systems integration with existing test machines. The partner structure combining manufacturers of opto electronic systems and of materials test machines will guarantee practicable technical solutions and rapid exploitation of results. Marketing of a fully commercial system is planned to commence within six to nine months after project completion. For exploitation also further SME partners, preferably test machine builders and end users shall be included market appraisal is presented in the proposal.
