The main outcome of this project is an pilot scale prototype and associated processes for plasma PVD metallisation treatment of synthetic textile materials.
The different steps have been done according to the following schedule :- state of the art concerning metallisation treatments have been studied in task 1,- adaptation of plasma PVD metallisation treatment for textile substrates, at laboratory scale and measurement of performances obtained on metallised samples, in tasks 2 to 4,- transfert of results obtained at pilot scale on an existing plasma reactor, after some technical modifications, PVD metallisation treatment for textile substrates, and measurement of performances obtained, on metallised samples in tasks 5 to 7.
The objectives of this project are to apply and validate a Magnetron Physical Vapor Deposition technology on synthetic fabrics and yarns to coat them with one or more metallic layers. This technology offers decisive advantages in the metallization process when use on non textile materials , such as high coating adhesion, very wide range of potential metals to deposit, from refractory metals to special alloys. The presently available solutions for textiles coating, dry or wet, do not offer such properties. To reach the intented goal, the metallization of various products with different metals, the project will be include in two main phases The first one will be performed with a Magnetron PVD laboratory equipment (already used by one of the two R&D performers) on small sized samples of concerned technical textiles. Iterative tests of these samples will lead to process parameters adjustments and to the feasability assessment. The second phase will consist in the adaptation of a Plasma surface treatment specific equipment for textiles (belonging to the second R&D performer), by integration of Magnetron PVD required adjustments. The functionnal tests of this demonstrator will be followed by the metallization of real products for each SMEs partner. Omplete conformity to quality tests will provide a full appreciation of the achieved potentialities of this new metallization technique. This project involves 4 SMEs from 3 Member states covering a wide variety of products and applications including projection video screens, quilts and sleeping bags, vasculars and surgical implants. The R&D work will be performed by two french entities specialised respectively in metal deposition and technical support to the textile industry.
