Objective
The development of a novel technology for industrial wastewater detoxification and heavy metal recovery is proposed. Industrial sectors that will benefit from this technology include electroplating and surface finishing operations, tanneries, photographic laboratories, etc. The technology will rely on the ability of immobilized algal cell walls for heavy metal adsorption due to the presence of chelating groups in algal cellulose (cell biopolymers, including carboxyl, imidazole, sulfhydryl, etc.). Seaweed will be collected from eutrophic waters (Venice lagoon and other water bodies) and processed to maximise their cation exchange capacity. The processed biomass will be packed into column filters and their performance will be optimised by adjusting the filtration conditions (pH, flow rate, bulking agent, etc.) and developing an automated monitoring system. Performance parameters will be estimated under real conditions of operation in the facilities of four core group proposers. Column regeneration and metal recovery procedures will also be established. The partners will take full advantage of their access to the market through local and international trade associations to promote the product using all available means and taking advantage of the product's environmentally friendly character.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
