Objective
The production of tufted cut pile floorcoverings is of great economic importance to Europe. In regular intervals, the tufting parts (needle, knife and gripper) of a tufting machine have to be replaced due to mechanical wear. During this so called set up time, the machine cannot produce carpet, i.e. the machine's rate of utilization decreases in relation to duration and frequency of the machine's set up. The consequences are considerable economic losses; they are especially severe for high speed tufting machines with cut pile technology (one down time of 10 16 hours every 3 days). Technical goals of this project are reduced and less frequent set up times. The economic aim is an increased loomstate fabric amount of up to 20 %, without installing new machines. The estimated cost advantage of reduced set up times amounts to approx. 1 MECU p.a. for a medium size tufting company. By optimisation of the force relations at the tufting parts, their working life is prolonged and the adjustment times are reduced by appropriate auxiliaries and procedures. Major aspects are objectivity, precision and reproducibility of the method. Another crucial part of R+D work is apart from mechanical engineering activities development work in the field of optical measuring technology and microelectronics.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
