DEMONSTRATION OF THE DECENTRALIZED HIGHLY INTEGRATED POROUS BURNER TECHNOLOGY IN HOUSEHOLDS

Objective

The aim of the project is to demonstrate the new burner technology of combustion in porous media under end user conditions. Parts of the Research & Development work have been carried out also under the Joule III programme (Contract Nr : JoE3-CT95-0019). Due to the advantages of the Porous Medium Burner with integrated Heat Exchanger, it is now possible to demonstrate a heating device which is very small in size combined with excellent emission behaviour and very high dynamic power range for the first time ever. As a consequence, the Porous Burner units to be demonstrated can help to reduce both, heating costs and moreover pollutant emissions by allowing the heating equipment to be operated at its maximum efficiency for all possible heating needs. The end user feedback achieved through the demonstration action is necessary in order to achieve a fully marketable, novel heating device.

During the last few years, a great deal of investigation on combustion in porous medium has been performed, starting with basic experiments by mostly russian scientists. These investigations were continued by the Institute of Fluid Mechanics/ University of Erlangen (DE), leading to a Porous Medium Burner with integrated Heat Exchanger. In order to realize steady combustion in inert porous media the combustion region was stabilized using two porous medium regions with different porous sizes. The premixed gas flows first through a region with an equivalent diameter of the porous medium which is less than the quenching diameter. Therefore, a flame propagation within this region is prohibited. At the position where the flame front should be located, a steep gradient in the porous size is realized, resulting in porous medium cavity space diameters larger than the quenching diameter. Only in this region the flame can propagate.
The main principal advantages of steady combustion in inert porous media may be summarized as follows :
- increased heat transport between the gas phase and the porous medium because of the large inner surface of the porous medium, - higher combustion velocities and cooling of the reaction zone resulting in low NOx-emissions because of the superior heat transport properties of the porous medium,
- high combustion process stability because of the large heat capacity of the porous medium.
R&D activities on a novel heating device for households based on the new technology of combustion in porous inert media have almost been completed. Therefore, the Porous Medium Burner units can prove their superiority to conventional heating devices also under end user conditions. For the energy and anual money saving 13% and 22 ECU per device compared to a conventional caloric value gas boiler are expected. The project leads to an improved design and therefore to a fully marketable, novel heating system, that could be introduced to the market late in 1999.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
