Magnetic Molecular Materials

Objectif

The aim of the network is to coordinate the activities within the Field of molecular magnetism, with particular emphasis being placed in the design, synthesis, and investigation of the physical and chemical properties of new classes of magnetic materials. The network is divided into four sub-groups: molecular ferromagnets, spin cross-over materials, large spin clusters, theoretical models and investigation techniques. The common objectives of the network are: the synthesis of new molecular based materials which below a critical temperature order as bulk ferro- or ferri- magnets; the synthesis of new materials undergoing spin cross-over transitions and their use for devices for optical information storage; the synthesis of new materials containing nanometre scale molecular magnetic clusters; the development of suitable experimental and theoretical techniques for the investigation of magnetic molecular materials: susceptibility and magnetisation measurement at very low temperature and very high fields; magnetic resonance spectroscopy; Mössbauer spectroscopy; X-ray spectroscopies; neutron diffraction; optical spectroscopies; MO techniques.
Research has been undertaken on: the synthesis of new molecular based materials which below a critical temperature order as bulk ferromagnets or ferrimagnets; the synthesis of new materials undergoing spin cross over transitions and their use for devices for optical information storage; the synthesis of new materials containing nanometre scale molecular magnetic clusters; the development of suitable experimental and theoretical techniques for the investigation of magnetic molecular materials: susceptibility and magnetization measurement at very low temperature and very high fields; magnetic resonance spectroscopy; Moessbauer spectroscopy; X-ray spectroscopies; neutron diffraction; optical spectroscopies; magnetooptic (MO) techniques. Various aspects have been studied: mixed valence cyanides ordering as ferromagnets at 240 K; molecular based magnets with fully interlocked 3-dimensional structure, mechanism of the cooperative spin state transition in iron (II) complexes; unpaired spin density in molecular ferromagnets; manganese clusters with superparamagnetic like behaviour; new molecular based magnets; light induced spin state cross over effects; structural magnetic correlations in polynuclear copper (II) complexes; theoretical models for the thermodynamic properties of 1-dimensional magnetic materials.
