Objectif The goals of the network are twofold: to study the mechanisms leading to the formation of polymer-solvent compounds (or complexes or intercalates) and to determine the molecular structure of these compounds. The investigation is focused on three systems, namely, poly vinyl chloride (PVC) (Strasbourg, Madrid), syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) (Salerno, Sheffield, Strasbourg) and polyoxyethylene (PEO) (Mons, Strasbourg). Several techniques are to be used: neutron scattering and diffraction (Strasbourg), light scattering (Mons, Strasbourg), differential scanning calorimetry (Strasbourg, Mons), NMR, infra-red spectroscopy (Madrid), electron microscopy (Sheffield), small-angle and wide-angle X-ray scattering (Salerno, Sheffield). Chemical modifications will also be used to find out what effects on compound formation can a small chemical perturbation induce (Madrid). A theoretical approach by means of computer modelling will also be carried out (Sheffield, Strasbourg, Salerno).Investigations on chemically modified polyvinyl chloride (PVC) have clarified the origin of the weak links in thermoreversible gels. it is now clear that these links, which play an essential role in determining the gel mechanical properties, are PVC solvent compounds. Studies on syndiotactic polystryrene (sPS) systems have led to the determination of the solvents which promote gel formation and those which yield chain folded crystals (spherulites). As was already suggested for other polymers, the solvent's shape, which hinders (gel forming) or promotes chain folding (spherulite forming) is the key parameter. The thermal behaviour of single crystals made up of sPS solvent compounds has also been determined. It has been shown that in polyoxyethylene (PEO) compounds the folding habit is very sensitive to the solvent type. With resorcinol, once folded chains can be obtained, while with p-nitrophenol nonintegral folded chains are formed.
