Objective
The objective of the study is searching for substances with biological activity and also to elucidate taxonomic and ecological relationships for the taxa studied. Components of the work include crystallographic, plant chemistry and chemical component studies.
The first phase consisted of obtaining crystals suitable to carry out the structural studies necessary to elucidate the crystalline and molecular structure of the compounds isolated. Crystals were obtained of 2 products extracted from Iryanthera tricornis: 2'-4'-dihydroxy-4-6'-dimethoxy-alpha 1 beta dihydrochalcone (1) and 1-(2'-4'-dihydroxyphenyl)-3-(3',4'-methylenedioxyphenyl) propane hemihydrate (2). Compound (1) was crystallized from the leaves of Iryanthera tricornis and recrystallized with a solution of acetone hexane. Crystals of compound (2) were obtained from the extracts of the woody trunk of Iryanthera tricornis collected in the Amazon region of Colombia. Thus exact descriptions of two new natural products isolated from plants of the Colombian flora have been given. Studies on plant chemistry have been conducted on the following species: murrava exotica (Rutaceae), petiveria alliacea (Phytolocaceae), cespedezia spatulata (Ochnnaceae), the genus clusia (Guttiferae) and solanum vestissimum D (lulo). The chemical components of 3 marine sponges didiscus osceata, agelas conifera (agelasideae) and ircinia campana have also been determined.
