Vulnerability of pipe lines under seismic loading

Objective

The main aim of the additional proposal detailed separately in this proposal package is to perform experimental and theoretical investigations into the pipeline systems installed in Bulgaria. This study will provide valuable information for comparison between pipeline characteristics for systems developed using soviet technology and those developed in the European Community Countries.
The objectives of this study are to develop a better understanding of the typical Bulgarian pipeline joints vulnerability to seismic events using an equivalent soil springs beam model to analyze the soil-pipe interaction under seismic loads.
The study will review and collect existing data on the pipeline systems used in Bulgaria. Laboratory investigations will be performed to identify their behaviour under the appropriate loading conditions to simulate a seismic event. Evaluation of the typical Bulgarian soil dynamic properties will be carried out to provide an input to the numberical modelling of soil-pipe interaction. The model described above will be developed. The information developed under this project will provide a valuable input to the industries in Bulgaria using pipeline distribution systems. Also it will be of scientific interest to compare the results of the study with those from CEC countries to investigate the differences and varying vulnerabilities. In addition to being directly applicable to Bulgaria the results are likely to be applicable to other former soviet block countries using similar technologies.
The results of the study will enable further investigation into lifeline systems vulnerability throughout Bulgaria, and the Balkan peninsula.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
