Objective
THE INVESTIGATORS, IN COLLABORATION WITH PROF. LARS EHRENBERG OF STOCKHOLM UNIV., WILL BRING TO THE EC PROJECT GROUP AN EXPERIMENTAL CONTRIBUTION RELATED TO IMPROVING THE SENSITIVITY AND RELIABILITY OF RETROSPECTIVE WHOLE BODY DOSIMETRY FOR CHERNOBYL CLEAN-UP WORKERS BASED ON THE USE OF ELECTRON SPIN RESONANCE (ESR) TECHNIQUES.
TOOTH ENAMEL FROM IRRADIATED WORKERS WILL BE STUDIED WITH ESR AND, INSTEAD OF THE CONVENTIONAL X-BAND (9 GHz) SPECTROSCOPY, Q-BAND (35GHz) SPECTROSCOPY WILL BE EMPLOYED.
Q-BAND SPECTROSCOPY IS EXPECTED TO PROVIDE 1-2 ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE ADVANTAGE IN SENSITIVITY, POTENTIALLY ENABLING DOSE EVALUATIONS IN THE RANGE O.l - 1 Gy TO BE MADE WITH FRAGMENTS OF TOOTH ENAMEL OF SEVERAL MG OR LESS. IF SUCCESSFUL THIS WOULD AVOID THE NEED FOR WHOLE TOOTH EXTRACTION.
ESR SPECTRA FOR A RANGE OF MINERALS WILL BE STUDIED, INCLUDING CARBONATES, HYDROXYAPATITE AND FLUORAPATITE (RADICAL ION CENTRES) WITH THE AIM OF ESTABLISHING OPTIMUM MEASUREMENT CONDITIONS AND DEVELOPING PROCEDURES FOR THE MEASUREMENT OF ESR SPECTRA IN TOOTH ENAMEL.
FRAGMENTS OF ENAMEL FROM IRRADIATED WORKERS WILL BE EXAMINED AND DOSE ESTIMATES PRESENTED FOR CORRELATION WITH MEDICAL EVIDENCE PROF. NATARAJAN OF THE UNIV. OF LEIDEN HAS AGREED TO COLLABORATE IN ASSESSMENT OF STUDIED WORKERS USING CHROMOSONE PAINTING TECHNIQUES.
THE INVESTIGATORS WILL DISSEMINATE THIER FINDINGS WITHIN THE EC PROJECT GROUP AND LIASE WITH THE GSF GROUP WHO ARE CURRENTLY INVESTIGATING THE USE OF ESR TECHNIQUES WITH TOOTH ENAMEL.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
