Diagnosis related dose: an investigation on patient risk and image quality in European hospitals

Objective

The amount of radiation given before a certain diagnosis is made, depends on factors ofmedical, technical and/or organising character. A pilot study (CEC Radiation Protection Contract Bi7-054) devoted to the inventory of existing useful methods of dose assessment in Diagnostic Radiology was completed in 1992. A methodology for patient data and equipment data collection is available, and the goalof the presently running project (F13P-CT920024) is to include more hospitals in the study, to develop the use of the Image Quality Figure (see BIR Report 20). One of the goals of the main project is the inventory of the reasons that can lead to the choice of examinations on a diagnostic path, and the effect on patientdose.
It is stated that these reasons can be of sociological, economical, technical or medical origin.
Regarding thece aspects, the recent history in the 20th century of the Central and Eastern European countries has been very different than that of Western Europe.
We therefore expect that the two teams mentioned in this proposal can supply valuable additional information to the project.
The group in Romainia, will collect patient data as described for the Diagnosis Related Dose project.
Ina later stage dosimetric measurements will be carried out using the protocol which is presently developed by the teams in Brussels and Nijmegen.
The group in Hungary possibly can suggest a third diagnosis from their specific domain of activity or contribute to the existingdiagnoses after contacts with other departments in the Semmelweis Institute. Co-operation with these two countries also can initiate or extend Quality Control programs/guideline in radiology in both countries by the dosimetry aspects, and reduce the patient dose.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
