Objective
The covering layers formed inside cracked concrete barriers exposed to a flow of groundwater containing calciumbicarbonate are to be tested for their permeability for ionic and neutral species. The work will be carried out in continuation of and as supplement to experiments made at Riso National Laboratory (DK).
Radon (atom size 0.38 nm) will be used as tracer for monitoring permeability changes in the covering layers during the formation and during steady state conditions.
The radon atoms generated in this way will be used as tracer for examination of the change in permeability of the typically about 100 ,um thick covering layers of calcium carbonate formed by reaction between Ca(HCO3)2 in the solution and the Ca(OH)2 from the concrete. The experiments is expected to give information about the pore volume available for diffusion of an uncharged, not interacting dissolved species, which may then be compared With similar results for diffusive release of ionic species through the layers. The purpose is to improve the understanding of transport mechanisms in the layers. This may be of direct importance for safety assessment of the release of radionuclides from such systems. Various parameters such as temperature and effects of partial drying of the systems may also be investigated. The method may possibly be developed to study diffusion through other types of covering layers on concrete. The results will be used by Riso National Laboratory (DK) and AEA Technology, Harwell (UK) for the optiminization of the use of various types of concrete as barrier of backfill material in waste disposal facilities.
