Objective
The Concerted Action EURICUS-I, which title is indicated above, aims at testing the hypothesis that the non-medical management of the ICUs does influence the outcome of patient care.
The design of the Programme is therefore that of making the inventory of the relevant variables concerning organisation and management (0 & M) of ICUs (facilities, decision-making, manpower and personnel, finances and culture) and analyse the variation of these in association with the medical variables which may be used as indicators of effectiveness and efficiency of the same ICUs.
Up to 80 ICUs from 12 EEC countries were already selected in this study. During 4 months data is collected simultaneously in all ICUs, following the same methdology, as described.
The inclusion of an equivalent sample of 9 Polish ICUs, besides the mere increase of the total sample, and because of its organisational characteristics, will expectedly increase significantly the variation of the 0 & M variables and therefore be a relevant contribution to the EURICUS-I sample of ICUs. Moreover, the inclusion of Poland in the Programme, notwithstanding the modest contribution of resources (9 ICUs), may largely contribute to the policy-making of Health Care in Poland.
