Objective
The additional proposal has the same objectives as earlier: To assess the potential usefulness of fish oil supplementation in pregnancy in the prevention of preterm delivery, fetal growth retardation and preeclampsia, and in the therapy of already
diagnosed cases of fetal growth retardation and preeclampsia. Subordinate objectives are to assess biochemical effects of
fish oil supplementation in pregnancy in order to obtain a
better understanding of pathophysiological mechanisms.
However, the additional proposal is mainly concerned With
increasing the number of centres in the trial. According to our latest assessments of the enrolment rates of the currently
participating centres, it is clear that more centres need to be included to obtain the overall sample size aimed for in the
trial.
This will be achieved by including centres in Eastern European countries (see list). The design and general protocol for the new centres will essentially be similar to those of the existing centres, although certain logistical problems may require special solutions (eg, randomisation may be decentralised to particular centres because of less efficient communication over phone and fax).
It should be noted that the intension to expand the trial to cover include Eastern European countries is in accordance with advices given by the project review board during meeting in
Brussels April 6, 1994.
