OCCUPATIONAL RISK FACTORS FOR RARE CANCERS OF UNKNOWN ETIOLOGY. SEVEN EUROPEAN CASECONTROL STUDIES OF CANCERS OF SMALL INTESTINE, GALL BLADDER AND BILE DUCTS, THYMUS, EONE, MALE BREAST, EYE AND MYCOSIS FUNGOIDES.
The objectives of the study are:
a. To explore specific hypotheses for the seven specific cancers. b. To screen all seven cancer sites for an occupational etiology by estimating associations with a number of potential carcinogenic exposures and work processes.
c. To explore the mechanism of carcinogenic action for identified risk factors by examining deactivation of the p53 tumor suppressor gene.
Little or nothing is known about the etiology of the rare cancers which have been selected for the present study. The pattern with which these diseases occur across countries and socio-econom1c groups indicates, however, that occupational risk factors may be involved in the etiology. No systematic search for potential occupational risk factors has previously been made for these diseases. We are therefore studying the occupational risk factors for the seven cancer diseases. The existing literature gives rise to some specific hypotheses about occupational risk factors, and these will be tested in the study. The primary aim of the studv, however, is to search for new associations.
The study will be carried out by teams in Denmark, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy (Padova, Florence, Torino), Spain (Sabadell, Matavo, Valencia), Netherlands (Amsterdam, Maastricht), Sweden (Orebro, Linköping, Umea), Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The funding for the Dutch and the Swedish parts of the study is still uncertain. It is therefore of utmost importance to ensure the participation of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
Estonia will contribute with a total of 50 cancer cases and 200 controls. Latvia will contribute with 93-114 cancer cases and 120-160 controls. Lithuania will contribute with 100 cancer cases and 400 controls. Close Collaboration has already been established with the centres in these countries, and we are convinced that high quality studies can be completed there.
