Organization and dynamics of molecules in ordered phases: integration of experiments, theoretical models and simulations

Objective

The present proposal concerns extension of the research project of the Human Capital and Mobility network entitled 'Organization and dynamics of molecules: Integration of experiments, theoretical models and simulations'', to two additional teams operating at the Universities of Ljubljana (Slovenia) and Moscow (Russia) respectively.
The enlarged research proposal not only fully conforms to the objectives of the network program, supplying high quality and specific expertise to cooperation activities, but also contains additional contributions which extend the scope of the original project. on one hand, the microdroplets of liquid crystals dispersed in solid matrices, studied at Ljubljana, have high surface-to-volume ratios, and this characteristic provides a unique possibility of studying the effects of surface interaction and confining geometries on liquid crystal ordering. On the other hand, the availability of homologous series of liquid crystal polymers with various chemical structures but the same mesogenic groups, spacer length and molar mass, studied at Moscow, facilitates the task of recognizing the particular ordered structures resulting from molecular or sub-molecular constituents, and the molecular dynamics determining macroscopic transport properties. The new proposal also enhances the potential for exploitation of the results by focusing the attention on systems of relevant technological interest in the field of display devices, electro-optic and photo-optic applications, and high modulus fibers. Lastly, the extension of the network will enable new experimental techniques, such as polarizing optical microscopy, light scattering, dielectric relaxation and second harmonic generation, to be shared amongst all groups.
The work programmeincludes investigation on dynamics of liquid crystals in cylindrical cavities and thin chiral smectic films, design and synthesis of liquid crystals polymers with specific physico-chemical properties.
