An astrophysics network for training and research

Objective

The Copernicus Astronomical Center (CAC) in Warsaw is the largest and most productive astrophysical institution in Central Europe with a well proven record of excellence in teaching and research. It has strong links of collaboration with the most important astrophysical institutions in the world, including several ANTARES members : IAP (Paris), IOA (Cambridge) and MPI (Garching). We propose to extend the existing ANTARES network to include the Copernicus Astronomical Center. Such an extension would enable CAC to get postdoctoral support as well as provide it's own resources to ANTARES participants visiting collaborators at CAC. Their institute is well equipped in PC ans workstation-class computers, INTERNET links to the outside world and a good library. The Center owns a spacious building (including a hotel for visitors) located in central Warsaw. We therefore believe that the Copernicus Center is a valuable potential partner for ANTARES participants. In this proposal we present existing and suggest new joint projects which are in the forefront of current astrophysical research, are ideal for training, and would benefit greatly from support provided by the ANTARES program. Four of them fit neatly into the ANTARES list of existing and projected collaborations. These are : (1) galaxy formation theory, (2) studies of the cosmic microwave background (3) studies of active galactic nuclei and (4) quasar absorption lines and intergalactic medium. A fifth possible topic is asteroseismology, because a vigorous and productive collaboration on this subject already exists between CAC and Cambridge.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
