Objective
TWO EXTENSIONS TO THE PRESENT PROJECT "MAPPING EUROPEAN FAMILY AND HOUSEHOLD PATTERNS"HAVE BEEN SELECTED FROM THE LARGE NUM8ER OF HIGH QUALITY APPLICATIONS RECEIVED. THE FIRST PROJECT INVOLVES THE EXAMINATION OF THE SOCIAL DEMOGRAPHIC, AND ECONOMIC FACTORS INFLUENCING THE RECENT EVOLUTION OF HOUSEHOLD STRUCTURES IN THE TERRITORY OF THE CZCH REPUBLIC. SOME OF THESE PROCESSES PARALLEL THOSE UNDER WAY IN WEST EUROPEAN SOCIETIES BUT THERE ARE ALSO A NUMBER OF SPECIFIC FEATURES, NOTABLY THE POLICIES OF THE FORMER COMMUNIST GOVERNMENT AND A HIGHER LEVEL OF MORTALITY WHOSE IMPACT ON FAMILY AND HOUSEHOLD PATTERNS NEEDS TO BE MEASURED. THE RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF LABOUR AND SOCIAL AFFAIRS IN PRAGUE WILL EXAMINE THE LATEST MICRO-CENSURES OF THE REPUPLIC ON THE BASIS OF A STANDARD CLASSIFICATION SCHEME TO PROVIDE DATA OF QUALITY COMPARABLE WITH THOSE ALREADY AVAILABLE FOR A NUMBER OF WEST EUROPEAN POPULATIONS.
THE SECOND EXTENSION TO THE PROJECT WILL BROADEN THE RESEARCH PERSPECTIVE WITH THE PARTICIPATION OF AN ETHNOLOGIST FORM THE SLOVENE ACADEMY OF SCIENCES AND ARTS. IN TERMS OF FAMILY AND HOUSEHOLD PATTERNS, SLOVENIA IS QUINTESSENTIALLY A FRONTIER AREA, AND THE DETAILED MICRO-STUDY TO BE TO BE UNDERTAKEN WILL INVESTIGATE THE IMPACT ON THE FAMILY AND HOUSEHOLD OF SLOVENIA'S CULTURAL AND ECONOMIC DIVERSITY.
