Objective
The proposed project investigates how the security of nuclear plants can be improved by the use of a tele-operated mobile robot equiped with appropriate inspection sensors (e.g. radiation, temperature, vision cameras). More precisely, it will demonstrate how robotics technology, in the form of a mobile inspection platform,
i) can be used by plant operators for routine surveillance tasks, ii) can contribute to raising the general security of nuclear installations while maintaining reduced human radiation exposure. The proposed activity is composed of 2 parts :
a) To demonstrate remote radiation mapping of a test site using the (EC IMPACT project) mobile robot equiped with the (IMPACT) radiation sensor. b) To extend the "East-West" technical collaboration by performing a second inspection mission involving
either a sensor, chosen by NIKIMT (Russia), which will be integrated onto the IMPACT mobile robot;
or a demonstration of the IMPACT robot working in collaboration with a Russian robot.
Part (a) is a demonstration of the technological results of the EC TELEMAN IMPACT project. part (b) is a collaborative venture in that mobile robotics and associated technologies (sensors) from both the EU and Russia will be combined in a single inspection mission within a Russian nuclear plant. The demonstrations are expected to be held at the SMOLENSK nuclear plant. This project will also involve collaborations with ROSENERGOATOM (the Russian nuclear energy producer).
