Objective
To demonstrate a circulating fluidized bed of 15 mwth capable of burning coal with coarse granulometry and high sulphur content without damage to the environment.
The first work phase took place from November 1984 to October 1985 and allowed to lead in the same time an experimental program for associated research and the studies of the prototype design, and also to lay the foundations for a scale-up to 100 MWth.
The work during the first phase included:
- parameter study and analysis by simulation on a mathematical model of the hydrodynamics, the particle size analysis and the solid flows
- an experimental program for measurement of exchange coefficients as a function of the particle content in the reactor
- a combustion study program on coal as well as on petroleum and asphalt coke
- a test program for the feeding of the fluidization air distributor and a study of its hydrodynamics
- the definition of the design decided upon for the 15 MWth prototype
- extrapolation of the design to a power of 100 MWth
- a study of the patent aspect
- the preparation of an invitation to tender and the submission of the complete tender by the builder, its analysis, the research for simplification and a new estimate of the necessary investment amount.
The circulating fluidized bed of 4. 5 m2 will be installed in the district heating system of the C. E. N. of cadrache and will produce 23. 5 t/h of saturated steam at 25 bar. The temperature is 850 c and the fluidisation velocity is 7 m/s. The coal input is 4 230 kg/h. This plant burns coal of large particle size (0-10 mm and even larger), thanks to the attrition and the increased time in the furnace due to internal recirculation by the cerchar pyramid and siphon grate with which it is fitted. The coal to be used is the " flambant de provence " containing 25% ash and 4. 4% sulphur.
It is expected to reach 90% desulphurisation without any additives due to the calcite content of the ash and the high recirculation rate. The plant comprises a combustion chamber with a draft - off zone for the largest particles of ash and coal in which is placed a first heat exchanger for production of steam. The recirculation of solids is designed to cool them (producing steam) before return.
