FLUIDISED BED BOILER OF 4 MW CAPACITY TO BURN HIGH ASH PORTUGUESE ANTHRACITES MIXED WITH IMPORTED COAL

Objective

Installation of a 4 MWth fluidised bed boiler to burn low grade Portuguese anthracite mixed with imported coals. There will be a steam turbine added to the boiler to produce power. The project will aim at demonstrating the technical feasibility of fluidised bed system in burning coals of very high ash content.

The fluidised bed boiler under construction will operate under atmospheric conditions. Because Portuguese anthracite is a low grade fuel which requires a long combustion time, deep bed operation, though more costly due to greater fan power requirement, is preferable. In addition, the sulphur content of the Portuguese coals is about 0.5 to 2% by weight, however, as there is more coal throughput due to its lower calorific value, reasonably high amounts of sulphur needs to be removed in the bed which also necessitates a deeper bed. Both underbed and overbed feeding systems are to be employed. The bed inert material will eventually be composed of limestone and ash. The ash fusion temperature is relatively high which will enable higher bed temperatures to be used in an attempt to compensate the sluggish nature of the anthracite particles. The gases leaving the boiler will pass through a twin - cyclone to remove particles. The electricity generated will be supplied to LNETI installations. The basic operational conditions are
Coal feed rate : 950- 1200 kg/h
Temperature : 900 - 950 deg. C
Electrical power requirement : 160 kW
Excess air : 25 - 60 %
Steam produced : 4500 kg/h at 40 bar and 450 deg. C
Electrical output : about 1000 kW
Operation hours per year : 8000 hours

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
