Objective
This project mainly aims to:
- demonstrate the good combustion and desulphurization of provence high sulphur coal by the Cerchar Calif Process
- operate this fluidized bed combustor in an industrial environment and show its reliability
- develop intermediate size boilers between small fluidized bed boilers (up to 6 MWth) and circulating fluidized bed units (above 50 MWth)
- replace fuel oil with high sulphur coal fines, saving about 3,000 TOE/yr.
This demonstration unit will be located on the provence power plant site and will produce steam for its auxiliary needs. It will burn 0-10 mm fines, the temperature within the fluidized bed varying between 850 and 900 C. It consists in :
- a fluidization and combustion chamber, including the grid developed by cerchar
- an impaction chamber
- a convection chamber
- a cyclone separator for fines recovery and recycling
- a baghouse filter, an exhaust fan and a stack
This unit will be operated automatically, with only a remote monitoring from the existing control room.
