Objective
To substitute natural gas in a large industrial copper smelting complex by pulverized coal burnt with pure oxygen in a special burner designed by air products. Oxygen use increases the furnace melting capacity. The patented burner will be capable of co-firing PC & gas for low grade coals or to operating in the dual mode (gas used if PC is not available). The output of the burner is 16 GJ/H. Ashes are absorbed into the furnace slag.
Measurements : fuel consumption per unit of metal melted, furnace productivity, energy balance, product quality, environmental control. First application of an oxy-pulverized coal burner.
The operating concept has proved successful, producing a system capable of firing a furnace with either oxy-gas or oxy-pulverised coal. However, the forecast 10 % improvement in combustion efficiency using coal has not materialised. Currently the system is not sufficiently financially attractive to proceed further and notice of termination has been given.
Pulverised coal filtered from carrier air, conveyed by dense phase system to burner also supplied with oxygen and natural gas, via a control system.
