Objective
Installation of start-up burners using pulverised coal to replace petroleum fuel on the Nr 6 Generator boiler at the Emile Huchet power station, the aim being to achieve maximum or even exclusive use of coal thereby saving the petroleum fuel currently consumed by the auxiliary burners.
A 10.7 MW direct ignition pulverized fuel burner for use in pulverized fuel tangential flow boilers has been installed in a 600 MW unit. Tests, carried out in 1986, were successful, the burner being tested under normal operating conditions using coal with a wide range of ash contents.
Coal boilers currently in use at electric power stations use gas or oil fuel to start-up and sustain combustion during periods of low service conditions. Consumption of such high-cost hydrocarbons therefore varies with the operating conditions at the power station. For example, hydrocarbon consumption at the 600 MW Nr 6 generator, amounted to 13,220 TEP in 1984.
The objective of the project is to prove a new technology based on pulverised coal burners which are intended to replace or avoid the dependence on hydrocarbon based fuels during start-up and low service phases. The burners developed for the project are intended for installation on the tangential type heating boilers commonly used in Europe.
This new type burner can function on powered coal of up to 40% ash content: 24 are to be installed on the Nr 6 boiler, fitted at each corner, and at six different heights.
Pulverised coal will be pneumatically injected into the burners using 6 compressors and 6 screw pumps: these feedcoal powder from a 220 m2 funnel. Combustion air for the new burners will be from the existing air supply of the Nr 6 boiler. Each burner will deliver 10.7 MW for coal consumption of 1.6 to 2T/h. Coal powder grading is 85 to 90% less than 75um particle size. This requires the re-commissioning of a coal crusher at another unit, since the one at the Nr 6 unit is unsuitable.
The pulverised coal will be pneumatically transferred from either unit 1 or unit 2 to unit 6 (a distance of 500 mtrs) at 10T/h.
The new burners have been laboratory tested: only when field tests under full scale operation have been conducted will it be possible to determine whether or not to replace the auxiliary gas and oil burners. If this eventually proves to be the case, annual savings currently estimated at FF21 million should be achievable, at which rate payback would be 2.7 years.
