CLINICAL REHABILITATION USING ELECTRICAL STIMULATION VIA TELEMATICS

Objective

Functional electrical stimulation (FES) can help incomplete Spinal Cord Injured (SCI) users to walk better, but lack of knowledge about how to get the best use from equipment hampers its deployment in daily rehabilitation care. CREST will overcome this by facilitating communication between user groups throughout Europe, demonstrating that interactive tele consultation with an expert can enable FES systems to be delivered by non-expert professional users. Standardised multimedia assessment, teleconsultation, individualized walking strategies, and visual programming environments are its key developments, enabling a good uptake of pan-European individualised prescription of FES systems for incomplete SCI patients. It is envisaged that the system could also apply to other large categories of conditions like CP, stroke, and MS.
