LIMESTONE AQUIFER THERMAL ENERGY STORAGE AS A HEAT SOURCE FOR HEAT PUMP

Objectif

The aim of this project is to obtain practical experience from the establishment and operation of a low temperature heat store in a limestone aquifer in connection with a district heating system, and to demonstrate the possibilities of commercial use of this type of aquifer in heating systems in combination with heat pumps.

The waste heat from a nuclear research reactor is used as a heat source for a 2.2 MW heat pump connected to a district heating system. The temperature of this waste heat is 40-45 deg. C. However during normal operation approximately three times as much waste heat is available as can be utilised by the heat pump.
The nuclear reactor is closed down for 5 days every 4 weeks and during this period heat is at present supplied by oil burning. The idea is to store surplus heat from the reactor in a limestone aquifer and extract this heat during periods of reactor shutdown.
Two main wells 100 m apart will be used, one for injection of the heated water, and one for extraction. Water flow will be up to 20 cubic m/h. The water extracted is expected to be at around 30 deg. C.
Two further wells, for measurement purposes, will be drilled. These will be equipped with temperature and pressure transducers and will be connected to a computer to a computer system. The measurement phase will include3 long injection/production cycles of approximately 1 month duration each.
