DEVELOPMENT AND EXPERIMENTAL VERIFICATION OF A COMPUTER MODEL WHICH SIMULATES THE THERMAL BEHAVIOUR OF HOUSES

Objectif



THE AIM OF THIS PROJECT WAS TO EXAMINE THE EFFECT OF EXTERNAL CLIMATIC FACTORS ON THE HEAT DEMAND OF EXPOSED DOMESTIC SITES AND TO EXAMINE THE IMPROVEMENT IN THE MICROCLIMATE OBTAINABLE FROM DIFFERENT SITE CONDITIONS AND THUS ASSESS THE SAVINGS THAT OPTIMUM SITING AND INTERNAL RETROFITTING CAN HAVE ON THE ENERGY CONSUMPTION. THUS IT SHOULD SHOW THAT SIMPLE CONSERVATION STRATEGIES COULD IMPROVE THE MICRO-CLIMATE AND LIVING CONDITIONS.

THE THERMAL AND ENERGETIC BEHAVIOUR OF TWO UNOCCUPIED ISOLATED HOUSES HAVE BEEN RECORDED OVER A TWO YEAR PERIOD. ONE HOUSE IS A POOR CONSERVATION STANDARD BUILDING, THE OTHER IS A LOW ENERGY HOUSE WITH HIGHER CONSERVATION STANDARD AND INCORPORATING SOME PASSIVE SOLAR ELEMENTS; BOTH HOUSES WERE 1 STOREY OF COMPARABLE SIZE (115 M2). THE EFFECT OF ENERGY CONSERVATION TECHNIQUES HAS BEEN EVALUATED TOGETHER WITH THE EFFECT OF ALTERING SITE CHARACTERISTICS (MOSTLY WIND BREAKS). THE SAVING DUE TO THE ERECTION OF WINDBREAKS WERE IN THE ORDER OF 5 % TO 10 %. THE ENERGY SAVINGS OF THE LOW ENERGY HOUSE HAVE BEEN OF THE ORDER OF 70 % OVER THE BASIC HOUSE WITH A PAYBACK TIME OF ABOUT 7 YEARS. MUCH LONGER PAYBACK TIMES (20 YEARS) OCCUR WHEN WINDBREAKS ARE CONSIDERED. A MODEL WAS ALSO DEVELOPED WHICH DEMONSTRATES THAT THE USE OF REGRESSION ANALYSIS BASED ON SHORT MONITORING PERIODS HAS ADVANTAGES OVER DIRECT LONG TERM MODELLING AND SIMULATION PACKAGES.
