REDUCTION OF ENERGY CONSUMPTION IN AN ELECTROLYSIS UNIT FOR THE PRODUCTION OF SODIUM CHLORATE

Objective

Demonstration of improvements in an electrolysis unit for the production of sodium chlorate for the purpose of reducing the energy consumption.
The expected energy saving of the production is estimated at 12000 MWH/y with regard to 1987 at a production level of 9100 t/y.
The provisional results on the measurements till Decmber 1991 are :

- the new type of electrolysis-cell with an electrode-gap of only 2.35 mm answers the expectations.
- the application of a special quality of polyvinylidene-fluoride, has been up to now successful.
- the energy consumption in the months July, August, September, October and November has been reduced to an average of 4900 kWh/t sodium chlorate.

However, the energy savings hoped for have not been fully realised.
The energy consumption of the sodium chlorate electrolysis will be reduced by the following improvements :
- increase of reaction temperature from 60 to 80 deg.C by the application of new construction materials (PVDF and titanium)
- a new type of electrolysis-cell with an electrode gap of only 2.35 mm (ancient cells : 6 mm) and a reduced gas/liquid ratio.
- a natural brine circulation by an improved lay-out of cells and brine circuit
- improved process control of the crystallization
- heat recovery by concentration of chlorate brine before crystallization.
The above mentiond improvements will reduce the consumption of energy in two ways : - the direct current consumption for electrolysis will be reduced by the decrease of overpotential and decrease of resistance of the brine.
- the alternating current consumption will be reduced by the elimination of pumps, compressor and the recovery of waste heat.
The expected energy saving of the production is estimated at 12000 MWh/y with regard to 1987 at a production level of 9100 t/y.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
