Objective
Aim of the project is to solve in a new way the problem of integration the electric energy needs on ship. By marine engines used to day which have high efficiency it is often impossible to supply the whole electric energy required by the ship only recovering the heat of the exhaust gases from the diesel engine, by a steam plant rankine cycle operating. The project suggests to supply electric energy by a particular plant organic fluid operated which recovers the heat which is available in the supercharging air and heat that is available in the exhaust gases of diesel engine at the exit of the donkey boiler of conventional steam boiler plant. In comparison with a conventional boiler, it is foreseen, for a navigation period of 300 days/year, an energy saving of about 1200 TEP and a 4.7 years payback time, at project level.
The main reasons to not develop the project are the following :
1. For safety reasons, an intermediate cycle should have to be introduced between gas and organic fluid, which will reduce the useful power from 230 kW to 175 kW.
2. The introduction of the intermediate cycle will raise considerably the construction costs.
3. The fuel price has been reduced and the current improvement of the diesel motor efficiency has consequently reduced the potential for recovery.
The selected organic fluid will have not to be toxic or inflammable. The conventional steam recovery plant will supply approximately 500 kw power while the one organic fluid operated will supply approximately 230 kw. The organic fluid plant will substantially be constituted by two air-organic fluid heat exchangers, one gas-organic fluid heat exchanger, a turbine generator system, a condense and a feed pump.
