Objective
To install a mechanical recompressor of steam in the crystallisation unit and in the syrup condensation unit of a sugar processing plant.
It was not possible to take all the measurements intended during the 1985 sugar beet harvest. Consequently, measuring to verify the values used as a working hypothesis, continued throughout 1986. Problems encountered during this period were either solved as they arose, enabling the obtained results to be immediately verified, or were highlighted as a target to be achieved in terms of equipment modifications, during the out-of-season 1987 period.
It was also decided to continue automation of the crystallization plant by installing a MODUMAT 800 computer in a control and technical room to be built in 1987.
In order to determine the size of the compressor it is necessary to know both the flow of evaporated steam, and the flow of steam consumed by the five vacuum pans. There are two ways by which these two flows can be calculated:
- by a direct global measurement;
- by measuring the outlet of a vacuum pan during a cycle (it is possible to calculate global outputs by establishing the relationship between a cycle and the rhythm at which the vacuum pans are started).
It has been decided to apply both methods.
In addition, meticulous understanding of the cycle will facilitate programming of the computer which will control the vacuum-pans.
The project consists of 5 phases, starting April 1985 and scheduled to be completed by 31.01.88. The phases are as follows:
- Planning and detailed material definition and specifications. Due to last from April 85 to April 87. - Automation of the crystallisation unit, necessary to be able to operate steam compressors. Work due to last from April 86 till April 87.
- Installation of steam compressors in the crystallisation unit. Exhaust steam will be re-compressed and pumped back into the crystallisation heating system. This phase will require a new building to house the compressors and the electrical equipment as well as new piping to link them with the crystallisation unit. Work is due to last from September 86 till May 87.
- Installation of a steam compressor in the syrup condensation unit. This will require a preconcentration (pre-evaporation) stage using recycled steam. This phase entails modifications to the building to accommodate the equipment and the compressor as well as linking all units by pipes. The work should last from February 86 till October 1986.
- Full operation and measurement phase which is planned to start on 25.09.87 and to finish on 31.01.88. Measuring devices will be installed during the various construction phases, however EDF may put in additional metering equipment. The results will be analysed jointly with EDF, the national electricity board, and by IRIS, the Sugar Industry Research Institute of France.
