NEW LOW PRESSURE AMMONIA SYNTHESIS PROCESS WITH REDUCED POWER CONSUMPTION

Objetivo

The purpose of this project was to demonstrate, on an industrial scale, a new low energy ammonia synthesis process operating at low pressure and requiring a low energy consumption.
The project has not been realized because the investment cost has raised from 4990 to 8310 Million Lire and the advantage/year, with the actual tep value, would not have justified the costs.
The tail gas of the existing plant, instead of being burned as fuel, feeds the plant for ammonia synthesis working at low pressure (50-80 kg/cm2).
The main parts of the plant are:
Two flow radial reactors series connected,
Steam production system recovering the heat of reaction,
Ammonia in water absorption system,
Two stages distillers of the ammonia solution,
Drying system of non reacted gases, which are recycled to the reactors.
Therefore, ammonia is produced at low pressure in a plant using, as feed, gas initially destined to be burned as fuel. The studies have been conducted by the Istituto Donegani of Novara.
A Process Book has been produced; it contains basic data for the project of equipment, piping, measurement control and electrical equipment. Fertimont has co-ordinated the work and has also carried it out together with Tecnimont and Societa Idromacchine of Porto Marghera.
