WARM AIR HEATING AND DOMESTIC HOT WATER PRODUCTION WITH INDIVIDUAL GAS-FIRED BOILERS

Objective

Dwellings in highly insulated new apartment buildings with low heat requirement are equipped with warm air space heating and domestic hot water (DHW) production by means of individual condensing gas-fired boilers. The warm air for space heating purpose is produced by circulation into a "double skin" DHW tank.
With respect to a conventional plant yearly energy saving should reach 5.87 MWh (GCV) for a 3 room-flat and 7.8 MWh (GCV) for a 4 room-flat, i.e. 0.45 TOE and 0.60 TOE respectively.
Payback time is expected to be 3.5 years.

1. The project is to be carried out in a total of 185 dwellings in the Paris area. The average k-value of external walls is 0.52 W/(m2 k) and windows are double-glazed. Moreover thermal bridges have been carefully avoided.
2. The 112 litres-DHW tank (operating temperature: 70 deg. C; boiler: 15 kW) is equipped with a "double skin", the external one being highly insulated and the internal one being means of heat exchange with circulating fresh air. This warmed air (19 deg. C to 40 deg. C) is then circulated into the dwelling through fans and ducts for space heating purpose. In summertime the valves are closed in order to avoid air circulation. Temperature sensors allow a fair calculation of heat requirement and the temperature of warm air supplied is dictated by means of a valve in order to enhance the room temperature up to the desirable level only.
3. Phasing of the project is as follows:
(i) building and testing of 5 prototypes
(ii) assembling and implementing in 110 dwellings
(iii) assembling and implementing in 75 dwellings
(iv) monitoring (one full heating season)
(v) assessment of results.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
