Objective
The aim is to install an external thermal insulation on existing building to decrease the heat losses and cancel the thermal bridges. This insulation includes air duct to bring the air of ventilation to each dwelling. The air duct are also insulated and the air is pre-heated by recovering heat on the exhaust air of ventilation. This kind of ventilation is innovative and gives a solution to condensation in the dwellings.
The proposed process touches on two areas :
- Thermal insulation : when renovating, thermal insulation is applied to the exterior of the walls. While it will cover the thermal short circuits due to openings in the wall, it can never really stop the heat losses which pass through window and door frames. What's more, the high cost of insulating from the outside and of window framing leads many renovators to treat only the building corners. - Ventilation : air intakes are often sealed during renovation, in time producing condensation in the rooms. The new building techniques of preheating the intake air with the extract air are not used in renovation because of the difficulty encountered in installing the new network of necessary air ducts. The project consists of :
- A method of thermal insulation applied to the exterior of a wall, specifically designed to reduct thermal bridge heat losses through openings or through the building structural framework, and providing also an insulatedprotection for exterior ventilation ducts.
- A manufacturing process using sheets of fibre-cement including compound materials, such as glass wool, rubber and fiberglass which will :
. allow the sheets to be bent into various forms and to be adapted to the specifique surface of a wall
. provide thermal insulation
. provide watertightness to the surface
. allow the installation of exterior ventilation ducts.
The results which will be aimed for are the following :
- thermal bridge heat losses reduced by 70 % with an average U-value for the wall of 0.58 W/(m2k)
(i.e. an economy of 10 % on the global wall heat losses).
- recovery of 50 % of the heat losses from ventilated air (heat recovery exchanger on the extracted air of 60 % transfer efficiency).
- a global savings of 23 % on the wall and extracted air heat losses.
- a first cost permetting a payback time on the investment of less than 15 years for an industrially fabricated product.
For the proposed model, the energy calculations use an average G. value of 2W/(m2k). The energy savings should be 18 % of the wall heat losses and the heat recovery on the entering air should total 50 %, i.e. a global energy savings of 23 %.
