Objective
To test the efficiency of a newly designed single family gas boiler with condensation of flue gass, in two different climatic conditions in Italy: Northern (2,340 degree-days) and Central (1,440 degree-days). Expected gas consumption (average figures for one dwelling) are expected to be 2,273 m3/year, i.e. 1.9 TOE (North) and 1,193 m3/year, i.e. 1 TOE (Centre) respectively.
As compared with a conventional gas boiler energy savings should reach 863 (758 respectively) m3 of gas per year, i.e. 0.72 (0.63 respectively) TOE/year. As compared with a conventional gas boiler investment extracost should not excess 1 million LIT (approx. 700 ECU). Payback time is expected to be 3 years approximately.
1. The boilers were calibrated and a calculation model has been developed and validated for the processing of the field testing data.
2. Two patents concerning the new condensing boiler were filed in conjunction with the natural draught flue gases disposal and the corrugated plate heat exchanger-condenser. Modifications in the original design have been done in reducing the maintenance costs. A detailed functional analysis has been defined.
3. Problems have been successfully met in relation to supporting the condenser and relative to the interchangeability of the new boiler with the standard one.
The production plant of the units has been completed.
1. Five different phases are planned:
(i) design and construction of the production plant;
(ii) construction of a series of 55 samples of the boiler;
(iii) installation in 50 different dwellings to be choosen either in
apartment buildings or in single family houses;
(iv) monitoring. 20 additional conventional boilers of the same power will also be monitored for comparison;
(v) assessment of results.
2. Boilers provide both space heating and domestic hot water. They are made of stainless steel and have a capacity of 24.4 kW. These wall-hung devices allow the condensation of exhaust gases, the natural draught (no additional fan is required) and the conditioning of fumes.
