Objective
To demonstrate the ability of external wall insulation with prefabricated components, if applied on a 4 storey building to reduce the energy consumption. A first site is located in Copenhagen (expected savings 7,8 MWh/year for a gable wall of 120 m2); a second one is located in Northern Germany (expected savings 7,4 MWh/year for a gable wall of 120 m2).
The Copenhagen site was later replaced by a building site in Haderslev, DK
This project should show that external insulation can be industrialised and more efficient, both from the technical and economic point of view. The prefabricated components should be later manufactured on a larger scale than with usual methods and with a factory secured constant quality. Moreover the easier way of on site assembling would allow a 25% reduction of cost (incl. assembling).
Two gables, one in Haderslev, Denmark, and one in Kiel, Germany, have been insulated with the exterior insulation mentioned above under project description. Both gables were measured thermographically both before and after the insulation was mounted.
Only the German gable was followed in detail.
The proposed external insulation consists of prefabricated surface coated steel profiles and sheets with mineral wool as insulation. The joints between the components are designed in a special way (avoiding cold bridges, allowing moisture for the interior to escape to the exterior).
The project includes 5 phases -
1 : planning of project
2 : analysis, design, prototypes
3 : manufacturing and installation
4 : measurements and inspection
5 : analysis of results and reporting.
