Objective
This programme shall be seen as a first step of an integrated programme in order to demonstrate the feasibility of the MCFC as a component of both cogeneration plants based on natural gas and power plants based on coal gas.
The main targets targets of this programme are :
* Process design and engineering of a 100 kW MCFC cogeneration plant fed by natural gas.
* Process design and engineering of a 100 kW MCFC power plant fed by coal in direct connection to the High Temperature Winkler Lignite Coal Gasifier (HTW) of Rheinbraun AG at Berrenrath.
* Preparation of the demonstration of both systems.
The programme includes all necessary process design activities and will result in detailed process structures, process flow diagrams, energy balances, efficiency calculations as well in components and subsystem descriptions, drawings, specifications, etc.. A time schedule for the later construction, erection, start-up and operation will be defined.
During this programme the following basic work packages will be carried out :
* Process design in order to integrate the MCFC stack into cogeneration systems as the example of a natural gas fed cogeneration plant with approximately 100 kW el.
* Process design in order to integrate the MCFC stack into electrically optimized power plant systems fed by coal gas at the example of a 100 kW el. power plant direct connected to the High-Temperature-Winkler Lignite Coal Gasifier (HTW) of Rheinbraun AG at Berrenrath.
* Engineering of both plants and establishment of bid packages.
In particular the process design activities for both plants have to deal with the following tasks :
- integration of the plants to the electrical grid (DC/AC-Converter)
- utilization of excess heat (heat exchangers, steam cycle)
- utilization of anode exhaust gas (catalytic burner, hydrogen separation techniques, shift reactor, etc..)
- control system (gas control and electrical control)
- optimization of system pressure.
The results of process engineering analysis gained in other subprogrammes serve as the basis for the elaboration of these work packages.
The results of the process design are seen in detailed process structures and descriptions, process flow diagrams and energy balances of both plants.
The engineering of both plants will result in documentation of the plant components and their correlated bid packages. The main components are considered to be :
- natural gas treatment system and coal gas treatment system
- natural reduction system
- gas flow control system
- hot gas desulphurization and clean up system
- humidifying system for internal reforming processes
cathode gas treatment system
- control system
- cathode gas recycle loop with blower and heat exchanger for excess
heat utilization
- fuel cell module with all connections
- shift reactor, hydrogen separation system and likely a catalytic burner for utilization of anode exhaust gas and preparation of the necessary amounts of CO2 for the cathode gas, hydrogen recycle loop to anode.
- steam vessels for the production of vapour for the reforming process via the excess heat of the anode exhaust gas
- data logging systems
- automatical control systems and safety installations.
All components and all subsystems will be described, and drawings, specifications, installation and operating procedures will be worked out.
