Objective
THE GOALS OF THE PROJECT ARE PRIMARILY THE MAPPING OF THE FORESTRY BIOMASS FROM SATELLITE IMAGERY, AND SECONDLY THE MAPPING OF THE AREAS OF ACCUMULATION OF ENERGETIC RESOURCES AS A FUNCTION OF PHYSICAL, GEOGRAPHICAL, SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC FACTORS. DUE TO ADMINISTRATIVE REASONS, THE SECOND GOAL CONNOT BE ACHIEVED IN THIS FRAMEWORK.
THE AREA UNDER STUDY IS THE PROVINCE OF ABRUZZO IN ITALY. THE SATELLITE DATA USED ARE FROM LANDSAT-5. THEY ENTERED A DATA BASE TOGETHER WITH OTHER MAPS AND DATA RELATED TO THE FOREST IN ABRUZZO.
WE ARE MAKING USE OF THE MULTISPECTRAL CHARACTER OF THE SATELLITE DATA AS WELL AS OF THEIR FINE RESOLUTION AT GROUND (1 HA) TO IMPROVE THE EXISTING MAPS. COPPICE AND TIMBER HAVE ALREADY BEEN MAPPED BY CLASSIFYING THE SATELLITE DATA. THIS MAP IS SIGNIFICANTLY DIFFERENT FROM THE MAP MADE FROM GROUND OBSERVATIONS, AND SHOWS THE DETAILED LIMITS AND SOMETIMES THE SCATTERING OF THE FOREST. SURFACES DERIVED FROM THE SATELLITE MAP ARE IN GOOD AGREEMENT WITH OBSERVATIONS.
IN FUTURE, SATELLITE DATA WILL BE CLASSIFIED IN ORDER TO DISCRIMINATE BETWEEN OAK, BEECH AND CONIFEROUS, AND FURTHER TO DETERMINE THE VOLUME OF STANDING WOOD.
